Mass Microscope System

In partnership with the Foundation for Fundamental Research on Matter, AMOLF, EMSL has established a new mass spectrometry imaging capability centered around high-field FTICR mass spectrometry. The MALDI/SIMS FTICR mass spectrometry extends the Mass Spectrometry capability at EMSL by allowing direct identification and structural characterization of lipids, peptides and proteins from complex biological surfaces such as cells and tissues. This detailed information provides fundamental insights in dynamic biological processes. Applications include cell biology, microbial communities, plant and animal tissue profiling with high molecular specificity. It is the worlds’ first Cobalt-60 Secondary Ion-Fourier Transform Ion Cyclotron Resonance Mass Spectrometer. EMSL is a Department of Energy national scientific user facility located at PNNL.
