In 2010, the Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory or EMSL acquired an Orbitrap high-resolution mass spectrometer equipped with customized desorption electrospray ionization (DESI) source. Previously applied techniques of high resolution mass spectrometry analysis required solvent extraction of the material to be studied. Extracting secondary organic aerosol (SOA) samples in solvents can alter relatively unstable or labile molecules and, therefore, obscure analysis results. But, with DESI, scientists examine the SOA samples deposited on substrates, eliminating sample preparation stage and minimizing the residence time of SOA in the solvent.
