Citadel of Erbil December 2006

Citadel of Erbil

It was a refugee camp until November 2006. The refugees were then evicted by Kurdish government officials and each family was given $4.000 to build a house in the suburbs of the capital. The government has been planning on restoring the citadel, which is on the waiting list of the UNESCO as part of the world heritage.

It was a very emotional time to be playing music there with our biniou and bombarde (two tradional Breton instruments), as children were shouting with joy, even louder than ourselves.

So it was a shock for me to come back in December and find that cats were now the only inhabitants of the place...
