Even if you are deeply libertarian - and I think every American has a strong and healthy streak of libertarianism in him or her - you must recognize that individual liberty requires collective work so it can survive and be vindicated.
. . . We've lost sight of the social basis for liberty. . . . Even libertarians ought to have a sense of the common good. Only certain kinds of societies can be really effective in remaining free societies.
When societies become radically unequal, freedom can be threatened, not just because you undermine the freedom to act of those at the bottom of the heap, but also because the society can become very unstable.
