These eucalypts are fire-tolerant, and started to get their "emergency foliage" or epicormic growth very soon after they were burnt. It is the rough bark of their trunks and branches that protects the epicormic buds beneath, allowing them to produce new shoots quickly to keep them photosynthesising after a catastrophic loss of foliage.
