One of the few times i wish i traveled with my tripod more often. I am trying to figure out when i should be busting out the tripod. I am a run and gun type of shooter and in certain situations i just can't see using a tripod, but Heron's just don't move. They find a fishing spot and can stay completely still for minutes on end. I think i'll be traveling with my joby mini tripod when going down the rocks to photograph the heron's, along with my monopod ofcourse (which i use for stability while descending because it is very hard to get down there, especially with a boat load of photography equipment)
