A bonobo lays down and relaxes under dramatic light. What i love about this photo is that it shows the face in great detail, in an unusual position. Bonobos are one of my favorite animals because they are so very human like. It almost looks like this bonobo chimpanzee is smiling or laughing. I almost got the impression it was a emotional singer, singing it's heart out!
Photo Notes: When i saw this photo of a Bonobo laying down, i immediately knew i loved it. As a photographer, the single most important thing (besides your subject, ofcourse) is the lighting. Because i do not use a flash, the only lighting i use is what is available, in this shot it was natural light. No photoshoping was done, the pitch black in the right bottom corner is natural, amazingly.
It was about 11:45am when i took this photo, that is about the time i leave zoos. The sun is getting too high and it's almost impossible to capture the eyes when the sun is high. You can, however, get creative and get shots like this. You are looking for animals to be laying down on their backs or looking up in the sky, because that is one of the only ways you will capture light in the eyes on harsh sunny days, late in the day.
Photographed at Columbus Zoo (sorry i briefly added it to the cincinnati zoo group on accident)
Handheld, sunny day.
