myōjin torii

Torii gates mark the entrance into a sacred space where kami dwell and are worshipped.

Multiple torii gates leading into the shrine represent the increasing level of holiness as one approaches the honden (本殿), the sacred main hall in a Shinto shrine.

Passing under the torii gate means stepping into the domain of the kami, and proper etiquette is to bow once prior to entering or after exiting. Also, the centre of the gate is reserved for the kami, and visitors should pass at the sides of the gates.
