A Living Library in Chinatown

Rainwater catchment system and mural by Bonnie Sherk, students, and teachers in A Living Library at Gordon J Lau Elementary School in San Francisco, California.

The cisterns hold 2,410 gallons of water each time it rains, traveling 85' from roof to lower yard! The cisterns are covered with redwood to create new, beautiful benches for the schoolyard.

When I began teaching media and ecology here several years ago, there was only one small stairway garden. Since then, we've ripped up thousands of square feet of concrete and replaced it with edible and native plants! Students, parents, teachers, and community members have been with us every step of the way - thank you for all your support!
