Department of Homeland Security’s James Johnson Visits ECBC’s Sample Receipt Facility
Edgewood Chemical Biological Center (ECBC) Chemist Shawn Heinlein (left) describes to James Johnson (right), Director of the Office of National Labs at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the activities that take place at the Center’s Sample Receipt Facility (SRF), during a Jan. 20 visit.

The SRF is the nation’s premier facility that, once complete, will be able to receive, triage, sample and screen “unknowns” from all over the world including military theaters of operation, intelligence organizations and law enforcement agencies. Johnson also toured ECBC’s Advanced Chemistry Laboratory, which complements the SRF’s activities.

In his role at DHS, Johnson manages science and technology laboratories, as well as establishes strategic research and development partnerships with national laboratories. Both the DHS and FBI partner with ECBC in the SRF’s development and operation.
