Huai Ian is a Khmu village on the banks of the Mekong River about half way between Chiang Khong and Wiang Kaen in Chiang Rai province.

We spent 10 nights in a bamboo hut there in February 2010.

We got to experience many aspects of Khmu Village live and got to savor (or not) many foods that we are not used to. One morning we had squirrel and eggs (I should try that in a restaurant here). We also had rat, bird, fish guts and goat bile. Water buffalo skin was a one-time only "treat"

It was much milder climate than Bangkok--not as humid, though the nights were a bit chilly in the bamboo hut. We ended up buying hoodies to sleep in.

The air was quite smoky as it was though much of northern Thailand and Laos due to the dry season burning of agricultural fields. Apparently, February and March are the peak months for this.
