Moxie and Elsewhere
Should you ever find yourself in the Honolulu Zoo you might see a lioness who was once a Bronx resident and a big star in the Big Apple. “Moxie” was born on November 6th, 2008 and made her début at the African Plaines of the Bronx on Earth Day of 2009. As the first lion born in the Bronx Zoo in thirty-one years, she opened to rave reviews. The New York Times wrote "definitely a scene-stealer with a spunky and playful personality.”
M'wasi, a long term Bronx resident, played the part of the proud Papa while young zoo goers enjoyed seeing the loving mother skills of M'wasi’s young bride, Sukari. This Bronx Zoo video captures the pride of M'wasi and Sukari around the time when Moxie first captured the hearts of children of all ages.
The Bronx Zoo did not wait another thirty-one years for lion cubs. The photo above was taken on May 28, 2010. At the time Moxie was around nineteen months old and in this photo she is surrounded her younger siblings. Moxie was a great big sister and a big help to Sukari in raising the triplets Nala, Shani and Adamma.
This past season it was just M'wasi and Sukari on Lion Island but according to the rumor mill Sukari was expecting and there will be a new pride in the Africa section of the Bronx this spring. I don’t know what became of Nala, Shani and Adamma but should you ever visit the Honolulu Zoo, drop me a line and let me know if Moxie has started her own family yet.
