Twilight at the Merchant Mariners' Memorial
The memorial that is probably familiar to anyone who has waited for the Ferry to Liberty Island is on a pier just a few feet from Battery Park. The pier that is dedicated to all merchant mariners who have served America from the Revolutionary War through present day, was inspired by a Nazi photograph from World War II.
The view captures the desperation of American seamen after a Nazi U-boat attacked an American merchant marine vessel. While the marines held on to their sinking vessel, a German photographed the victims, and then the U-Boat left the struggling Americans, lost at sea.
The final words of the inscription on the marker “This memorial serves as a marker for America's merchant mariners resting in the unmarked ocean depths.”
