Welcome to the Mangroves!
One of my favorite spots in Belize, is Twin Cayes, a pair of mangrove islands separated by a ~150' wide channel. Sometimes you see crocs or manatees in the channel, but the real attraction to me is a good LOOOOOONNGGGG drift along the prop roots. Like these. The roots are encrusted by sponges, bryazoans, tunicates and hydroids with feather duster worms, crabs and a host of other inverts hiding (or not) among them. Many fish visit or call the mangroves home for part of their life. Enjoying the mangroves requires one to slow down, even from island time, and really inch along exploring all the nooks and crannies slowly and carefully. The rewards are worth it (at least to me!) Unfortunately my compatriots always end up pulling me out of the water after an hour or so... I need another two or three hours before I can even begin to cover the distances they did.
