Evening duck watch

There is a magic about the early evening sunset,

When the pink glow of the sun's final rays,

Paint a blush on the soft powdery clouds above,

And reflect in the near still surface of the mill pond;

The smell of honeysuckle vines and piney woods,

The freshness of the evening air,

As the earth purges itself from the heat of the day,

And the coolness of the water soothing tired bare feet;

The soft thunderous sound of the water in the millrace,

As it flows gently over the spillway to the run-off below,

The coolness of the gentle evening breeze,

As it rustles through the pines and oaks,

Shaking the leaves of the nearby corn stalks;

Crickets beginning their evening chirping,

The croaks of the frogs far out in the pond,

Sitting on old logs or lily pads calling for their mates;

All create a pastoral musical symphony and light show,

That puts a racing mind at ease from the day's worldly cares,

And creates a peaceful time for quiet reflection,

Meditation and fellowship with God.

That is the charm of the old mill pond,

At sunset on a quiet summer's eve
