60 Facts: Tea House

The tea ceremony house located in EWC's Japanese garden was one of the first built outside of Japan. The Jakuan, or "hut of tranquility," was built in Japan and reassembled at EWC.

Donated in 1972 by Grand Tea Master Genshitsu Sen of the Urasenke Foundation, the tea house continues to serve the community as the Asian Studies Program, University of Hawaii at Manoa, conducts "Way of Tea" classes and the UH Tea Club holds demonstrations for the public.
