Dugongs and sea turtles are listed as vulnerable and endangered on a global basis on the IUCN ‘Red List’1. Both species are being hunted towards extinction in Australia through illegal poaching for profit. Illegal dugong meat, sold for between Aus$40-60 per kilo is passing through Queensland airport not just undetected, but unmonitored by authorities.

The lax regulations surrounding the inability to interfere in the cruel and inhumane techniques used to kill dugongs and sea turtles also came under fire.
