We visited the great swamp refuge in NJ. Part of the trail has slate trail markers. I saw a jumping spider jet underneath one, lifted it up and was so obsessed with the spider that I did not notice the snake slither away until it was pointed to it. We walked back around and after a few minutes had passed came back to the same slate marker. I think as I was lifting it, I said, there is no way the snake would be back under here. It was, and it brought a friend. There were two small garter snakes under it. The original snake again slithered off pretty quickly but this one relied on camouflage and stayed still.
And then it bit me. :)
