Red Mountain Lake (yes, it really is that green!)

    Newer Older

It's been over two decades since I last strapped on a backpack to head into the mountains for more than just a day trip and WOW has my body gotten old! But with views like this, I'm planning to stay true to my commitment to get back into backpacking again.

While on your annual Oregon summer trip where we rent a Forest Service cabin, my life-long friend Brandon Tippy, his dog Boone, and I packed into Red Mountain Lake of the Elkhorn Mountains in northeastern Oregon to find this green gem awaiting us in peaceful solitude. While there we didn't see another person or even tracks of recent visitors. The campsite we selected was right on the lake with a small babbling creek just 20 feet away. Camping doesn't get much better. There were lots of brook trout in the lake and everything we caught was around the 9-10" size. We hadn't even left before we were talking about either a future return trip or possibly hitting one of the other lakes in the area next year.

I'm really looking forward to my next trip coming up in August when I take my 8 year old son out on his first backpacking trip. .....although I might leave behind the 12 pounds of camera gear this time....Ughhhh!!!! I have to admit that I've become quite the camera snob over the years and I abhor using a point and shoot, but all the additional shots below were taken with a simple Nikon Coolpix P&S camera and many of them are not half bad.

Great series of shots. It makes me realize that I only have a couple of months to strap on the pack myself and find some brookie ponds (although I'm likely to eat a few for dinner instead of throwing them back).

Great to see you back on Flickr and wonderful pictures! Never been to the Elkhorns but this looks gorgeous. And 1100 feet of elevation gain over that short of a hike is pretty hardcore...especially with that amount of gear.

That's a beautiful shot of the lake - I really like how you have composed and framed it. I love the extra set of shots showing your trip too. Hope you have have a great trip with your son - and please take your p&s camera at least so that we can see what you see!

Thanks to all of you for your comments and favs!

Yea, next time I hit one of these lakes, I think I need to bring along a pan and do dinner up right. ;-)

Anna you should make the trip over to the Elkhorns some day. It's only about a half hour farther away than the Sawtooths and there are some really great spots up there.

No worries Alison, I can't image that I would have at least one camera with me on any trip!
