I think that is a bit of a harsh statement! I have lived here far longer and seen it develop over the decades.... remember that a few years back all resources were concentrated within smaller areas... now those resources are spread far wider in an effort to address backlogs for housing etc. Despite this SA's economy and economic growth has been the strongest ever in the most recent years. My own investments have grown, many more people are owning houses and cars, so overall many more South Africans are far better off than before. We have a strong democracy as is borne out by the fact our President does not stay in power for 20 years... yes its not all roses and sunshine as the murder rate is much higher than it should be and the gap between poor and rich is still too big.... but the country is positive and has many world firsts that it has (and is still) achieving. Its not perfect, but it is certainly not falling apart.... if you are interesting in seeing some of the positive side have a look at www.sagoodnews.co.za/. Its only fair to also have a look at the positives and weigh that against the bad (yes I'm not denying there are bad things as well).

sorry that my words were a bit harsh , its just that ther are so many bad things happining to friends , famely and so on . My last week in south africa a class mate was kidnaped , druged and raped .Then on my last friday out with friends , whent to Fishhoek beach , we found a dead teen who was stabed for nothing more than his cloths . Its just seems like a every day thing .

Well you are quite correct that the murder and violent crime rate is way too high still, but its not that you are too scared to go to work or go out in the evening. I am always very careful though and am aware of that, especially in Cape Town. Standards of living and the economy overall are quite good again. I'm really sorry to hear about those bad experiences and I can believe they would leave a big impact on anyone.... touch wood its never happened to me or any of my friends. Mainly heard about friends that have been mugged or robbed without injuries - once is a lifetime occurrence for those three that I am aware of. Yes violent crime is certainly something that has to be addressed - one of the root causes appear to be the drug trade in Cape Town on the Cape Flats.

It fires every day ar 12:00 except on Sundays.... if you are in the CBD are you will easily hear it. Further away up 7km or sit can also be heard if the wind blows that way. Takes about 25secs for the sound to travel tho...
