Blackening | by duncan
Back to album

This is a 'blackening', which seems to be a rural tradition in parts of Scotland, and maybe elsewhere? The poor lady in the chair is going to get married soon, so her colleagues (this was a council office) have tied her to a lamppost and are liberally covering her in water, washing up liquid, flour etc. She wasn't too happy.

Where I grew up, they would put the groom and sometimes also the bride, would be chucked in the back of a trailer, covered in oil and flour, and driven around the local villages.
