Big Bands at Duke
Duke has a rich tradition of student bands with names such as the Swing Kings, Blue Dukes, Blue Imps, Grand Dukes, and the D-Men. The most frequently used name was the Blue Devils which passed from its originator "Jelly" Leftwich in 1926 to four successors with Les Brown last directing a band with that name in 1936.The most long lasting name was the Duke Ambassadors which was used until 1964 and is the precursor to today's Duke Jazz Ensemble.
