The Forgotten Ones

Hopewell Baptist Church

Established 1847

One of my favorite churches in Georgia. Here's a little history:

"Providence helped Hopewell Baptist Church to organize. Rev. C. D. Mallory and T. U. Wilkes served until 1850. Rev. L. R. L. Jennings, Atkinson, and James J. Wallace served until 1859. Edgar Jewell was pastor from 1859 to 1870. He lived in the pecan grove just before one turns to go to Godfrey in the Walker settlement. "

"Records of Hopewell Baptist Church in the Hopewell area of the county list a Mr. Ben Duke, Mrs. Mary Duke an children as members prior to the civil war. Records show that James Duke, a son was one of the lay minister's who established the Bethel Station Mission. This mission later became the Bethel Baptist Church."

"Bethel Baptist Church was once an arm of Hopewell Church. The records of Hopewell show that in 1852 Hopewell began a mission at Bethel Station. By 1855 this mission had become self supporting and asked to become a sister church. The first meeting place of the Bethel Mission was in an old log schoolhouse just in front of the old Zed Piper place."
