Hunt with the Northern Shrike

We watched in awe as this Northern Shrike hovered over some bull-rushes along Cargill Lake at Fort Whyte. It then dove down quickly into the snow and surprised us with a quickly killed meadow vole. These birds amaze me how they can carry large prey.


It was a miracle that these two shots turned out at all, as my camera settings were set for flash use.
