knapp's castle is a not-very-well-kept local secret in the santa ynez mountains above santa barbara. it's a ruined mansion! the trailhead to visit it is unmarked, and you have to hike a little bit along that trail to get to it, so it's easy to spend an afternoon going down the wrong paths the first time you visit... i love it to pieces. if this fancy hunting lodge (finished in 1920) had never burned down, it'd probably be just another private mansion in the hills. we have lots of those. instead, it's a privately-owned public space that quietly invites lots of people to enjoy the mountains and the fleetingness of human civilization. yay! (note that these chaparral mountains light on fire regularly. might not have been a great idea to build a lodge there.) there's actually a real castle of santa barbara in spain. update: as of january 2011, the owners have somebody doing construction there, "restoring it" but generally messing up the historic ruin. grar.
