When Birds Bounce 3I9146

It was a dreary Saturday afternoon at Barnegat two weekends ago. The jetty, usually peppered with fishermen and aspiring naturists, was noticeably empty. Long-tailed ducks, however, hung close to the inlet’s south side. Swallowed by the incoming tide, they would take to the air, flying parallel to the rocks and land on Barnegat’s unpredictable waters closer to its opening to the sea. I sat there, in the cool drizzle, enjoying their antics and smiling as they took to the air, only to land, bouncing across the surface like a skipping stone thrown across a summer’s evening lake. They are living proof that birds do bounce and aging men can smile. #Longtailedducks
