Papers Please [Explored Apr 28, 2010 #43]

Please indulge me as I step on my soapbox:

On Friday, April 23, 2010 Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer signed into law SB 1070. This bill is designed to identify people suspected of being an illegal immigrant, detain, prosecute, and deport them. This bill will go into effect in less than 90 days and when it does it will be THE harshest anti-immigrant law in the United States.

In a nutshell this bill will require that all Arizona Law Enforcement Officials demand proof of citizenship of ANYONE suspected of being an illegal immigrant. If said suspect cannot immediately show citizenship documentation said suspect will be arrested.

One government official says he can identify an undocumented immigrant by their shoes!

This Bill constitutes the legalization of and mandates racial profiling by Arizona Law Enforcement. If you look like a Latino, have brown skin, look out of place, you are assumed to be an illegal until you produce proof that you are a citizen. The government of Arizona has turned their law enforcement officers into their Political Fascist Police. This will undermine the trust that honest police officials have worked so hard to create with their communities.

Have we learned NOTHING from our history? Slavery of African Americans.

The rampant discrimination of the Irish in the early 1800's.

The horrible prejudice of Italian immigrants in the 1900's.

The Japanese internment camps on US soil in 1942.

The Holocaust during WW2.

Well, now we can add this Anti-Immigration Bill of 2010.

To be persecuted by the color of your skin is one of humanity's biggest crimes against itself and it is now legal to do so in Arizona.

This is such a slippery and very steep slope that the Arizona government is on.

Will they be creating internment camps for all the Latinos that will be rounded up? Technically NO immigrant is exempt from this law. How many times will you or I be stopped and asked to show proof of citizenship? Last year i had the pleasure of going to my high school reunion in Arizona. I grew up there. As much as it pains me I will not be returning there any time soon, if ever. For I am boycotting the state.

Illegal immigration is a serious issue and it's rampant in the Southwest. For decades every administration has either done little to reform immigration or has been stopped by Congress or Lobbyists. But this law is not the answer.

I'm just an artist with virtually no political sway save my right to vote and my 1st Amendment Right to Free of Speech. So I'm gonna use it and I encourage you to do the same if you feel likewise about SB 1070. I refuse to sit on the sideline stewing in my disgust and rage over this bill.

The image above is inspired by artist Glenn Grohe who designed a poster for the Office of Emergency Management during World War 2. In his poster there was an ominous image of a German soldier with the words "He's Watching You". This was the image conjured in my head the day SB 1070 was signed.

I'll be spending quite a bit of time in the next week or so writing to members of Congress, newspapers, Civil Liberty Organizations, and President Obama to express my outrage and to implore them to do the right thing.

Ric's Window You have many valid points. The borders should be protected but not with trigger happy militia. And you are absolutely right about writing to our representatives. I've already done so and am looking to write a few more people. We need to keep the pressure on the ones we elected. This what I see that needs to happen:
    - Rewrite the federal laws to be less wasteful, more direct
    - Incentivize immigrants to follow correct path to enter the country
    - Enforce laws against employers who break them
    - Immigrants NEED to learn English
    - If immigrants do end up residing here they need to pul their own weight for their community by paying taxes like everyone else.
These are just the high points.
Everyone deserves a chance for a better life but if they want to do it here in the States they need to respect our laws. But we also have to respect everyone civil liberties. This law, which presumes that everyone who is brown to be illegal, IS racial profiling. And as far as using Nazi symbolism I wrote about my decision in an earlier post. It was not done lightly. Unlike the Tea Party movement who flaunt Nazi symbolism with complete disregard because it's fashionable with their party.
    Thanks for the comments.

John Carmichael Hmm, I'm not quite sure what your point is other than you are screaming that you are not racist yet say things that, to me, are racist and fanatical. I don't recall any declaration of war. I see institutions voting with their pocketbooks against a bill that they see is wrong. And you want to boycott the boycotters? Lemme know how that works out for you. BTW, why don't you blame the businesses who hire illegals?
And I believe Pres. Obama disapproves of SB1070 because AZ has no jurisdiction over immigration. That is a federal issue. He did not mention AZ citizens. Good luck to you.

TEA PARTY LEADER I'm afraid that I really can't take you seriously for a couple reasons. Dick Morris pretends to be knowledgeable about policy but is wrong most of the time and hates to be fact checked. So he's perfect for Fox (not)News who is staffed by entertainers, not journalists. And from the brief glimpse of your photo-stream I can only assume that you are a person that can't be reasoned with or that can participate in meaningful debate.
And yeah, I would encourage everyone to block you. Have a good day :-)

The media has fabricated many misleading declarations about the bill which are entirely untrue. Lets encourage every Arizona and American resident to actually READ THE BILL. Let's help everyone become educated on the Bill!
The Media has stated that the bill will create racial profiling. This is a lie. The cops who currently racially profile will continue to do so whether this bill is law or not. Those who don't, won't.
The Media has created the concept that everyone of Hispanic ethnicity will be unlawfully targeted. This is a lie. Nobody will be unlawfully targeted or hunted down by this bill. It only offers Law enforcement officers the tools to verify ones resident status after they have been stopped by law enforcement while committing a civil violation or a crime.
The Media has said that all Hispanics will now be required to carry with them a birth certificate or immigration documents. This is a lie. Nowhere in the bill is this stated. A drivers license or Arizona ID is all that is needed.
The media has declared that the bill is superseding federal law. This is a lie. The bill only allows law enforcement officers to do their job, and that is to enforce the laws that are currently in place.
The media (and Obama) want us to believe that the bill should be repealed because its the "Federal Government's" responsibility to take care of illegal immigration, not the state. This is a lie. Arizona has the authority to arrest and detain those in violation of both Arizona law and federal law. That is why the bill requires local law enforcement to turn detained illegals to ICE, who holds jurisdiction over immigration and customs laws.
The media spins the concept of this bill to defame it as unethical and unconstitutional. This is a lie. All law abiding and tax paying citizens of this country HAVE THE CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT to be assured that the laws of this state and country are going to be enforced. It is unconstitutional to pardon those who have conscienceless disobeyed the immigration laws of this land.
Read the Bill, and help others understand its purpose and know what it really allows and authorizes.
here's a link to the bill:

Hmmm..interesting comments from those who do not live in the state of Arizona or who have never had to deal with people stealing water from your hose (which I pay for) in the middle of the night holding you at knife point saying "walk away f****ing gringo, there is nothing you can do" or having to deal with the constant repairs to my shed(which I pay for) and fences(which I pay for) from break ins and vandalism. The Arizona law does not do ANYTHING that is not already IN the Federal law except give the power to enforce the law(which the Feds have NEVER done). It is so amazing how we are ALL required to provide proof of citizenship through ID at ANY government institution such as the DMV, ANY time you use your credit/debit card or write a check, ANY time you get stopped for a traffic violation, ANY time you fly on a plane, take a train or take a cruise and ANY time YOU call for help from the police or law enforcement even if you are the caller. In fact, just about ANY time you are asked for your ID, which is just about daily, you never think twice about it even as you order your McBurger and fries with your debit card. But ask a dozen heavily clothed persons walking out in the open desert near no trails or roads, across private property, in 90+ degree heat with backpacks and water jugs, heading north just 10 miles from the Federal United States border for ID and suddenly we are in a newly formed NAZI state. We are asked for our ID when we are out fishing or hunting. Is that racial profiling and a violation of our civil rights? Funny how the hippies who live here in the winter in their converted multicolor school busses on BLM and National Forest land have no problem showing their ID when asked. The law applies to EVERYONE in Arizona, NOT those of Mexican heritage or specific skin color. It is now and has always been common for law enforcement officials to ask for ID when ANYONE is in a place where there usually isn't anyone around. They ask for ID if you are walking late at night through neighborhoods or alleys or are in parks or anywhere "after hours" where there shouldn't be anyone at that time. Is that racial profiling? There are standard border checkpoints on the highways and we get asked for ID every time we cross one. Is that racial profiling and a violation of our civil rights? Perhaps some of you should read the immigration laws of Mexico and see what THEIR laws and requirements are. Compared to the Mexico laws, ours looks like it was written by Mr. Rogers.
  • Vic Bonilla 5y

BillNRhondaWild You absolutely have the right to defend your property. Those guys who are stealing or damaging your property should be jailed and if found to be illegal should be deported. No argument from me there. But if you read the bill it says you must prove CITIZENSHIP, not just any ID. Did you have to prove citizenship when you went to McD's? I've read the bill 3 times. I have a relative who is an attorney and she read the bill. We both came to the same conclusion. The language of the bill targets Latinos on the SUSPICION of LOOKING illegal. Cops have already arrested US citizens who LOOKED illegal. This bill states that you are illegal until proven otherwise, that is the problem I have with this bill.
I lived for most of my life in AZ and I love AZ. Have you ever lived in Mexico? That country treats their own citizens like shit. This law is the start of a slippery slope to chipping away to everyone's civil liberties, including YOURS.
BTW, as much as I think the Obama administration has been weak on almost everything they have been deporting illegals far more than Bush EVER did:
Don't take being a citizen of the US for granted. You are no better than I nor vice versa. But I will defend my civil liberties as well as yours.

Wherever you stand, please take the time to read this; ought to scare the pants off you !

We know Dick Lamm as the former Governor of Colorado. In that context his thoughts are particularly poignant. Last week there was an immigration overpopulation conference in Washington , DC , filled to capacity by many of America 's finest minds and leaders. A brilliant college professor by the name of Victor Hansen Davis talked about his latest book, "Mexifornia,"
explaining how immigration - both legal and illegal was destroying the entire state of California . He said it would march across the country until it destroyed all vestiges of The American Dream.

Moments later, former Colorado Governor Richard D. Lamm stood up and gave a stunning speech on how to destroy America . The audience sat spellbound as he described eight methods for the destruction of the United States. He said, "If you believe that America is too smug, too self-satisfied, too rich, then let's destroy America . It is not that hard to do. No nation in history has survived the ravages of time. Arnold Toynbee observed that all great civilizations rise and fall and that 'An autopsy of history would show
that all great nations commit suicide.'"

"Here is how they do it," Lamm said: "FIRST, to destroy America , turn America into a bilingual or multi-lingual and bicultural country." History shows that no nation can survive the tension, conflict, and antagonism of two or more competing languages and cultures. It is a blessing for an individual to be bilingual; however, it is a curse for a society to be bilingual. The historical scholar, Seymour Lipset, put it this way: "The
histories of bilingual and bi-cultural societies that do not assimilate are histories of turmoil, tension, and tragedy." Canada , Belgium , Malaysia, and Lebanon all face crises of national existence in which minorities press for autonomy, if not independence. Pakistan and Cyprus have divided. Nigeria
suppressed an ethnic rebellion. France faces difficulties with Basques, Bretons, and Corsicans.".

Lamm went on: SECOND, to destroy America , "Invent 'multiculturalism' and encourage immigrants to maintain their culture. Make it an article of belief that all cultures are equal. That there are no cultural differences. Make it an article of faith that the Black and Hispanic dropout rates are due solely to prejudice and discrimination by the majority. Every other explanation is out of bounds.

THIRD, "We could make the United States an 'Hispanic Quebec' without much effort. The key is to celebrate diversity rather than unity. As Benjamin Schwarz said in the Atlantic Monthly recently: "The apparent success of our own multiethnic and multicultural experiment might have been achieved not by tolerance but by hegemony. Without the dominance that once dictated
ethnocentricity and what it meant to be an American, we are left with only tolerance and pluralism to hold us together."
Lamm said, "I would encourage all immigrants to keep their own language and culture. I would replace the melting pot metaphor with the salad bowl metaphor. It is important to ensure that we have various cultural subgroups living in America enforcing their differences rather than as Americans, emphasizing their similarities."

"FOURTH, I would make our fastest growing demographic group the least educated. I would add a second underclass, unassimilated, undereducated, and antagonistic to our population. I would have this second underclass have a 50% dropout rate from high school."

"My FIFTH point for destroying America would be to get big foundations and business to give these efforts lots of money. I would invest in ethnic identity, and I would establish the cult of 'Victimology.' I would get all minorities to think that their lack of success was the fault of the majority. I would start a grievance industry blaming all minority failure on the majority population."

"My SIXTH plan for America 's downfall would include dual citizenship, and promote divided loyalties. I would celebrate diversity over unity. I would stress differences rather than similarities. Diverse people worldwide are mostly engaged in hating each other - that is, when they are not killing each other. A diverse, peaceful, or stable society is against most
historical precedent. People undervalue the unity it takes to keep a nation together. Look at the ancient Greeks. The Greeks believed that they belonged to the same race; they possessed a common Language and literature; and they
worshipped the same gods. All Greece took part in the Olympic games. A common enemy, Persia , threatened their liberty. Yet all these bonds were not strong enough to overcome two factors: local patriotism and geographical conditions that nurtured political divisions. Greece fell. "E. Pluribus
Unum" --From many, one. In that historical reality, if we put the emphasis on the 'pluribus' instead of the 'Unum,' we will balkanize America as surely as Kosovo."

"Next to last, SEVENTH,I would place all subjects off limits; make it taboo to talk about anything against the cult of 'diversity.' I would find a word similar to 'heretic' in the 16th century - that stopped discussion and paralyzed thinking. Words like 'racist' or 'xenophobe' halt discussion and debate. Having made America a bilingual/bicultural country, having established multi-culturism, having the large foundations fund the doctrine of 'Victimology,' I would next make it impossible to enforce our immigration
laws. I would develop a mantra: That because immigration has been good for America , it must always be good. I would make every individual immigrant symmetric and ignore the cumulative impact of millions of them."

In the last minute of his speech, Governor Lamm wiped his brow. Profound silence followed. Finally he said,. "Lastly, EIGHTH, I would censor Victor Hanson Davis's book "Mexifornia." His book is dangerous. It exposes the plan to destroy America . If you feel America deserves to be destroyed, don't read that book."

There was no applause. A chilling fear quietly rose like an ominous cloud above every attendee at the conference. Every American in that room knew that everything Lamm enumerated was proceeding methodically, quietly, darkly, yet pervasively across the United States today. Discussion is being
suppressed. Over 100 languages are ripping the foundation of our educational system and national cohesiveness. Even barbaric cultures that practice female genital mutilation are growing as we celebrate 'diversity.' American jobs are vanishing into the Third World as corporations create a Third World in America - take note of California and other states - to date, ten million illegal aliens and growing fast. It is reminiscent of George Orwell's book "1984." In that story, three slogans are engraved in the Ministry of Truth building: "War is peace," "Freedom is slavery," and "Ignorance is strength."

Governor Lamm walked back to his seat. It dawned on everyone at the conference that our nation and the future of this great democracy is deeply in trouble and worsening fast. If we don't get this immigration monster stopped within three years, it will rage like a California wildfire and destroy everything in its path especially The American Dream.

If you care for and love our country as I do, take the time to pass this on just as I did for you. NOTHING is going to happen if you don't.
