"Die Räuber in Frankreich" / Ivoiry, France, 28.5.1916

Letter on reverse (below) kindly translated by xiphophilos: authored in Ivoiry on 7.6.1916 and addressed to a Herrn L. Zimmermann in Heidelberg. Ivoiry lies less than 30km to the northwest of Verdun.

Five NCOs from an unidentified specialist formation inside their dugout somewhere in the vicinity of Ivoiry. The monograms on the men's shoulder-straps would reveal which unit they are from, however they are tantalizingly indiscernible, although the uniforms and equipment suggests to me these fellows might be Pioniere. There is little doubt though, they are part of the German Fifth Army who were besieging Verdun at the time.
