The Old Man of Storr, Trotternish, Skye

Dawn light on the pinnacles of The Storr, Trotternish, Skye.

I had arrived at this spot almost 45 minutes earlier, in the pre-dawn twilight. Gradually, pink tones began to fill the sky to the south. As the sun finally rose over the mountains on the mainland, the basalt pinnacles of The Storr began to glow as they reflected its light. Meanwhile, beneath them, in areas of shadow the grass retained its verdant green colour, but in other places it began to take on yellow tones.

It was an incredible privilege to witness this scene unfold.

This is a wider-angle view than the previous shot on my Photostream. To the left of the image, Dùn Caan, the highest peak in the island of Raasay (Scots Gaelic: Ratharsair) can be seen. The main peaks of The Cuillin are behind the pinnacles of The Storr. On the extreme right horizon, the distant hills of Rùm are just visible.
