"Death of Hippie" Phoenix.

This shows the use of the Phoenix logo as a symbol of rebirth in the Haight Ashbury in 1967 at the "Death of Hippie" Celebration. The Phoenix is there, on the front of the coffin.

The event was set up by various groups, including the Switchboard and the San Francisco Diggers.

The photo is from an article on the event in Rolling Stone.

[ - in the Archive set, the Phoenix pages are grouped together with the Santa Clara windows for continuity to show the development of the design. but the new Phoenix design was done in 1967, after the Guadalupe murals of 1966. ]

- ( these teeny-tiny photos go back to the early days when Flickr encouraged us to keep photos small.

- nowadays, Flickr is open and encourages even RAW files.

- i'm slowly but surely redoing the pages with large photos where possible. i have the original clipping, so this one is possible. )
