Long-billed Dowitcher

My favorite waterbird shots from the past two days.

According to my trusty Sibley Guide to Birds of Western North America one good way to distinguish Long-billed and Short-billed Dowitchers is by listening to them while they feed. Long-billed Dowitchers give a constant soft chatter while feeding. Short-billed are silent while feeding. This one was part of a chattering flock that let me get very close. The flock of about 30 Dowitchers was accompanied by a few Pectoral Sandpipers at Murray Marsh today.

The Grebe was shot at Beaumaris Lake in Edmonton yesterday.
