Goshawk killing Grey Heron

Newer Older

Goshawk (Accipiter gentilis) killing Grey Heron (Ardea cinerea), Zoo Leipzig, Sachsen, Germany.

Last shot and serial shots. Look also at the first shot.

Wildlife shot!! It was taken in the Zoo aera, but they are not captive animals!!
Nothing for sentimental minds!!

In the thick of the crowd a juvenile goshawk, due to size probably a female, hunted for a grey heron. A heron seemed to be a little bit out of the league of a goshawk! From about 15 m both dropped down. The rest is pure nature and pure brutality and bloodiness!!! So, please, be aware of this!

    This sequence is just amazing
I've posted a link to the Bird Chat group for discussion
The Goshawk must have put her own life in danger:
a Grey Heron is a mean killing machine itself, with a sharp and powerful dagger
    at its disposal.

Horribly brutal but hey, that's nature. I guess the tables could could have turned if the Heron managed to stick the raptor with it's spear-like bill.

Amazing series of photos - well done!
The goshawk seems to know how to deal with this prey, because it's standing on the heron's head and thus preventing it from defending itself with its lethal bill.

Wow ! congrats on that award. This series is very good. I've just seen it for the first time. I shoot hawks and herons every day but have never seen a hawk attack a heron. They move so methodically about it as we do when we prepare our own meals. Rodents, snakes, and other birds don't have a chance when a hawk sights them in. Good work.

Excellent series Dominik of something very real and very much a part of nature. Many times we'd like to feel sorry for one or the other, but in nature these things aren't right or wrong there's no good or bad side to the story it just is the way it is. Nature has no morality. :)

Right place, right time, right gear, right technique ! Brill ! Thoroughly enjoyed the series, thank you for sharing. Goshawks are quite rare in the UK, however living in South Wales, there are quite a few, a pair within 2 miles, but probably never get the shots you have had heard. I have heard that in Berlin, they are literally swooping into the pigeons in the street in the middle of passers by !
