This image is for a poster created to promote the sale of some Hexagonal Origami Gift Boxes in support of the survivors of the Japanese earthquake and tsunami.
You can see views of all 20 boxes individually for sale in a set here.
You can plunge into the eBay auctions here.
The image includes some components derived from the wood block prints "The Great Wave off Kanagawa / 神奈川沖浪裏," and "Inume Pass, Kōshū / 甲州犬目峠" by Katsushika Hokusai / 葛飾 北斎. They are from a series of prints called "Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji". At the time the original prints were made - between 1826 and 1833 - there was effectively no copyright. Control of production of edo period ukiyo-e was by the publisher / printer, who had to print and sell the images as fast as possible before other people stole the ideas. The only limitation was the availability of the skilled craftsmen and artists needed to produce the wood blocks - one block for each colour used.
