This is a generic sinister looking virus modelled in Cinema 4D - loosly based on "round", "spiky" looking coronavirus' like H1N1 and HIV. After the initial model was created, the mesh structure was subjected to "Optimisation" - an automatic process whereby points / polygons that are too close together are merged into one. When done excessively, this starts to distress the overall shape, an intended effect here to prevent the model looking too "clean" and perfect. The polygons were then further subject to a slight "Crumple" transformation - with a similar intended result.
The virus was illuminated from the same direction as the camera, and the resulting image inverted. This produces the white crisp outlines that are often a characteristic of real scanning electron micrographs.
