157/365 June 6 - Locally Grown
When I was growing up, we stopped buying produce in the grocery store as soon as the first roadside stand opened. Of course, when I was a kid you couldn't get a lot of produce - at least at a reasonable price - unless it was in season. With Superstores and more efficient shipping methods, the days of eating oranges all winter and strawberries only in June are long gone.
This roadside stand popped up a couple of weeks ago just down the road from where I live. Though the food is all local, the timing is all wrong. Tomatoes and peppers aren't really ready to come out of the fields for a while yet. Our local greenhouses have changed the offerings at our simple roadside stand as well as in the grocery stores.
