Bringing up the rear

During the fire season declared by the CFA, all steam trains on Puffing Billy Railway are followed by a fire patrol. This patrol, crewed by two people, aims to keep itself five minutes behind the train ahead, which allows lineside fires caused by passing steam trains enough time to become noticeable.

Because PBR have many support vehicles the fire patrol can be quite surprising, however, in the coming years more of the "Gator" type road-to-rail convertable patrols (picture a green golf buggy with flanged wheels) will become the main patrol vehicles. A prototype has been in service now for some time, and more are on their way. With that in mind, seeing an old VR-style gangers trolley such as this used on the line is an increasingly rare sight: while three of them are housed in the museum at Menzies Creek, they very rarely venture out onto "the main line".
