The Nevada Test Site, where many dozens of atomic bomb tests were conducted in the 1950s and '60s. Yucca Flat is in the foreground and Area 51, part of the Nevada Test and Training Range, is at the round Groom Lake, above. In the middle is Papoose Lake. See Notes for more.

Hi doc, Were you in a private airplane taking this photo and they allowed you within a certain distance? I'm not sure how this works. I don't see much security on ground. Did you see any other planes in the air? And I don't understand what the "white" round surface is on area 51? a lake, cleared ground, a tarmac?

All the white places are dry lakes. What makes them white is just that they've dried up and left patches of salt or white dust.

I was in a commercial flight from Phoenix to Reno. It's a highway in the air, one of many you can make out on aeronautical charts. (See here.) I was more than 100 miles from Area 51, and many dozens from the nearer districts of this shot. The airspace over these places is restricted (R-4808N on the map, for the Nevada Test Site), but that's about it.

Hi Doc - I am the author of "Before the Nukes - the remarkable history of the area of the Nevada Test Site." I just completed a mystery/thriller novel called "Nuclear Shadow" set on the NTS. I am a self publisher creating a two minute video book trailer and I would like to use your arial photo ot the NTS to make people aware that it is not just a barren flatland. I can only offer you a copy of the book and a brief acknowledgment at the end of the video. Please let me know if this is okay with you. Thanks, Charles

Hi Charles. Feel free to do whatever you like with any of my photos. As you see on the right there, they are Creative Commons licensed to require only Attribution. Do that and it's fine. Love to have the book too. Write me privately and I'll give you an address. Cheers, Doc

    Hi,
Could you please tell me what flight you were on when you took this picture. And did you take this knowing what you were going to see or was it by accident. Amazing view and would love to see it. Somebody told me you could se Area 51 on a flight from Vegas to Seattle.

    Thanks, C2

I was on a USAirways flight from Reno to Phoenix. Don't know the flight number. At the time I shot this photo I was looking for Yucca Flat and Yucca Mountain. I didn't know where Area 51 was, and wasn't looking for it. So I guess you could say that this discovery was by accident. But then, I shoot a lot of stuff looking for those kinds of accidents. Check the whole flight to see what else I found. Much of that was accidental too.

Nice accident. Look forward to seeing more. Have a good one and Thanks!
