02 WASHINGTON CROSSING: "Washington Crossing the Delaware," by Emanuel Gottlieb Leutze - 1851

On Christmas Day [night] in 1776, George Washington led what was left of his army across the Delaware River in the middle of a blizzard to attack a Hessian outpost in Trenton, NJ. In one bold stroke, he turned almost certain defeat into at the least the promise of eventual victory. Washington’s crossing was immortalized in the painting, Washington Crossing the Delaware, by Emanuel Leutze in 1851. www.oldsaltblog.com/2011/12/washington-crossing-the-delaw...

Though taking place so long ago, the monumental night of December 25, 1776 can be visualized by most Americans today thanks to painter Emanuel Leutze. The crossing of the Delaware River was depicted in his famous painting, “Washington Crossing the Delaware,” in 1851.

Despite its inaccuracies, this painting is a vital part of American culture and is in the permanent collection at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. pabook.libraries.psu.edu/palitmap/DurhamBoat.html
