Joy and Evie: Ambassadors for Inclusion Head to Abu Dhabi
Joy Rector and Evie Sly are both juniors at Roosevelt High School, and close friends since the 6th grade. On Tuesday, March 12 they both also became ambassadors of sorts, heading off to Abu Dhabi as two of fourteen students from around the world selected to participate in the Global Youth Summit. The event coincides with this year's Special Olympics Winter Games. Before taking off, friends, classmates and members of Best Buddies gathered at Roosevelt for a pizza-eating/sign-making party before boarding school buses to the airport to give Joy and Evie a proper sendoff for their trip around the world. Earlier this year, DMPS signed an agreement with Special Olympics to support greater social inclusion by bringing together young people with and without intellectual disabilities on sports teams.
