Mountain Molasses Makers
"Although much of the process of making molasses is the same as it has been for centuries, Parlier and his son Mark, have updated the grinding process. The mill and gears that crush the cane are the same as they were fifty years ago but are now powered by a Dodge engine run through a ’54 Chevy transmission.
“We used to have a horse hooked to the mill,” said Range. “It took a lot longer. We’d have to change horses every once in a while. They had the horses tied to the end of that pole and it would lead them around and around and around like a grinding mill.
