This is the Streetwise vendor that works outside of the nearby Starbucks a couple days each week. He's consummately upbeat, always fun to chat with, and has great delivery of one-liners to hawk his wares to passers by.
This picture contrasts the impersonal mass distribution of most newspapers to the personal interaction inherent in each sale of Streetwise. Like the newsboys in old black and white films shouting “Extra! Extra!”, Streetwise vendors earn transactions with smiles and glib jibes.
The similarly colored background and sidewalk push the viewer’s focus vertically to the row of newspaper dispensers. The vendor’s slightly turned head and expression of “hey there” familiarity and the sharp focus of the Streetwise issue in his hand draw the focus horizontally to the subject.
