The Fascinating Harvest Moon
View of the Harvest Moon over our backyard. The neighborhood cat was having a relaxing time on the fence that evening!
The Harvest Moon was probably a term used in agrarian societies as they could work till late evening, harvesting their summer bounty in the fields in the month of September due to the plush moon light.
You'll definitely notice the Harvest moon if you look around! The Harvest moon also looks a bit bigger as its lower in the sky. This Sunday night (9/11/2011) was the full moon night so the ,moon will continue to rise after sunset for a few more days!
The unusually low hanging moon and that too in the same position for several days is what makes the harvest moon so special. In fat the moon is in the same position in our backyard for the last several days and it is quite interesting for me to see it right there, as though the moon's being a friend and saying Hi!
Scientifically, it happens because in the month of September, the moon rises just as the sun is setting for a few days after the full moon. Otherwise, in the usual scenario, the moon rises at sunset only on a full moon day and rises about an hour later each subsequent day. So watch out for the harvest moon the next few days in most areas of SoCal - Los Angeles, Orange County, etc.
