Black Darter @ Abney . Explored 23.8.12

Black Darter,sympetrum danae.

Not the best of images but was just so pleased to capture this beauty.Black Darters are the smallest dragonfly found in the UK-they are only 2/3 the size of demoiselle damselflies. The females,in-flight,can be mistaken for craneflies.

Have known these were about for a while but this is the first time I was able to capture one. This shot is the result of 3 hours stalking - would have prefared a better one so will keep trying.

Black Darters are found throughout the UK but are only local to certain areas.

The good news is that Abney Park has both the UK's largest and smallest Dragonflies on site
