the altercation

male Green Anole (Anolis carolinensis) and male Brown Anole (Anolis sagrei sagrei) please view LARGE

The mature male Green Anole shows the ridge or crest down the back called a "roach" which is used in territorial and breeding displays. The mature male Brown Anole is also exhibiting the crest-like ridge along its' back. Male Greens may fight other Greens, but the battle is usually not fatal for the loser. If a Green Anole and a Brown Anole fight, the Green almost always wins and kills the Brown. In this encounter, the Green won territorial rights for this top post of a chain-link fence. The Brown, luckily this time, just scurried off in defeat.

An epic battle...unfortunately, even if the green anole wins this battle, the brown anole will inevitably win the war.
