140404 OOM 2014 Merrist Wood
The latest Order of Merit (OOM) event for 2014 saw the Disabled Golf Association (DGA) at Merrist Wood GC, Worplesden, near Guildford in Surrey. Simon, Richard and Julie from this Crown Golf course provided a very warm welcome to all – Simon Fowler, Head Professional had managed to accept us as a last minute booking after having to move the event as just enough buggies were available on the day.
With 5 golfers having to drop out (and sending our best wishes to Lee Gillam after a nasty fall), 19 golfers from 17-70years old teed off on a dry dull day, perfect weather for golf! It was to be a game of two halves, the open parkland style of the front 9 presenting its challenges in bunkers and ditches and the back 9 through its sheer length and multiple water features. The scores reflected the difficulty of the course and maybe the condition of the greens due to the time of year when greens must be scarified and treated, they were very slow running. Somehow if your ball bounced on the fringe there it would stay like a game of stuck in the mud! That’s the thing about golf and of course all of us faced the same challenges.
Taking out our 3 OOM winners, winner of the front 9 competition was 70 year old Mike Lloyd (fibromyalgia, from Hampshire); Mike was 4th overall in the 18 hole competition and sparked controversy with 38points at his first event where we have a rule you cannot win at your first event so it was great to see his efforts rewarded at his second event. Also good to have Rob Grant from Portsmouth returning for his second event.
So in 3rd place was 17 year old Bobby David (autism, from Berkshire) with 28points; 2nd was Martin Jelley (amputee, from Surrey) with 29points; and the winner was Paul Houghton (amputee, from Essex) with 31points.
A good day was had by all and everyone was agreed this would be a very pleasant course to revisit in the summer.
