Back from extinction - Takahe Porphyrio mantelli [Rallidae]

Takahe at the New Zealand Mount Bruce National Wildlife Centre.

Thought to be extinct for 50 years - rediscovered in 1948. Flightless. Believed to be descended from the Australian Purple Swamphen, but 10 million years removed. The extinct North Island Takahe is now thought to have descended from a separate arrival of the Purple Swamphen. The Purple Swamphen made it here again about a 1000 years ago and is locally known as the Pukeko.

Used a Sony VCL-DH1758 1.7x tele conversion lens with a Lensmate 58mm adaptor on my Canon S2 IS at maximum zoom - the Sony is an amazingly good lens. Cropped slightly and reduced to 1024x768 (using picasa).
