1953 National Championship team

Maryland achieved sustained national success under Coach Jim Tatum who compiled a 73-15-4 record through nine seasons with the Terps. UMD's highly successful undefeated season in 1951 culminated in a conference title, a Sugar Bowl win vs. #1 Tennessee, and the No. 3 AP ranking. Two years later, the Terps achieved one better -- the No. 1 ranking and a National Champion title (crowned based on polls before the playing of any post-season bowl games). However, #4 Oklahoma beat the Terps 7-0 in the Orange Bowl to end their championship season.
