Melting snow and lichen

Since I first discovered my tiny "pet" lichens in the spring, 2007, I wondered if they would manage to survive when the woodpile is covered with snow much of the winter?

When the temperature warmed to +2ºC and I could see the ends of firewood emerging from the snow, I trudged through the knee-deep snow with my camera. They seemed to be quite healthy and happy!
