Grammar crisis at Sainsbury's

    Newer Older

Sainsbury's spend millions of pounds upgrading their East Dulwich store but fail to employ a signwriter who can follow basic rules of grammar.
Here they've incorrectly inserted an apostrophe into DVDs but not into CDs .... masterful work!

I'm sorry but this really gets on my tits, WHY are they different?!?!

      This is great!

I wonder if it was carelessness or if they figured by doing it this way they'd at least get one right.

CDs' correct in my knowledge and DVD's isn't.

Perhaps it means those CDs belong to one wealthy DVD. "These are DVD's CDs."

This is nothing; you should see the mistakes in Asian airports and train stations. It is heartbreaking to see such mistakes in so beautifully neat signs.

I prefer the non-apostrophed plural acronyms. GG -- is this a legitimate matter of style, or am I just wrong? :)

No, the correct version is the one without apostrophes.

And you know what ... Over a year later this sign is still proudly hanging in Sainsbury's

The older method was to use an apostrophe, but now newspapers and magazines are going without it. But in any case, being consistent with one style is the least a sign maker can do!
