    The In-Between
    "I don’t like how
    I don’t like how
    this morning is
    too easy
    open up an old book
    it is never the same
    I do not like how
this is so full and empty
    I cannot find the in-between
    just darting to and from
    gluttonous and starving
    I once found the in-between
held it closer than she holds dyed hair
    I am straddling quest
    I am straddling settled
the only time I feel we find the answers
    we are looking for
    is when we’ve emptied bottles
emptied is just the other side of full
    we crack these bottles
    over the heads of tombstones
    they shatter
    not full
    not empty
I am trying not to mourn destruction
    I don’t want to capture
    just earn
    not full
    or empty
    just be
    I don’t like how
    the last time we kissed
    we were not cataclysm
    nor inertia
I am trying to get back to her
without asking her to find me
not knowing how full our contents might be later
    I know we’re now
    Just empty,
trying to pretend we are sailboats
filling out sails with as much misery as we can
    calling it moving forward
even though we don’t move at all
in the corner of this body of water
I feel the breeze run through my hair
her fingers used to run through my hair
    When the breeze comes
I try to tie the jib just right so I might reach
    somewhere else
    When I reach somewhere else
it is all broken industrial and college kids
not much different in personality than all I had fled
but no one here knows her name
or that we once spent hours next to each other
debating the policies of West Wing dramatics
and that after our bottle broke
we started to say we love each other
    I don’t like how
when the sails carry me back south
from the depths of Puget Sound
    that all of the difference
    in Washington
    could not follow me
that every street corner we drive by
    reminds me of travel
    opening ourselves up
    I don’t like how I am spending
    so many days
    reclaiming the spaces I go
    from my memories
    of her
I am walking too many steps forward too fast
    I tripped backward
    fell off the wagon
    because a petal slipped out"
